Happy Feet in the Heat

Comments (1)

Summer can be tough on the feet, especially in Florida.  If you try to walk on the beach, or even your own driveway without some sort of shoes on, you are likely to burn your soles.  You are also more likely to contract plantar warts, athletes foot or other types of infections.  For this reason alone you should limit barefoot walking in the summer.

Many people also love to wear sandals, which can expose your feet to sunburn.  You should always make sure to put sunscreen on your feet if they are going to be exposed to direct sun. Skin cancers do occur in the feet and legs, and you should be checked at least yearly by your podiatrist.  Don't forget to reapply the sunscreen if you go in the water.  Even sunscreens that say they are waterproof are much less effective after immersion.

You should always wear some sort of shoe or sandal at the beach, pool, locker room and even in hotel rooms to decrease your risk of injury or contracting some type of infection.  If your shoes get wet, make sure to dry them thoroughly, as this environment is perfect for fungus and bacteria to grow.

It is important to stay hydrated, not only for your overall health, but also to decrease the amount of swelling that can occur in the legs and feet.

Exercise is very important for the blood flow in your lower extremities.  Muscle action in your legs also helps to decrease swelling.  If it is too hot outside to walk, try going to an air conditioned mall to walk.  You can also do calf raises anywhere as well as wiggling your toes and doing motions like spelling the alphabet with your feet in the air for range of motion.

Remember, summer is a great time to be outside and enjoy the nice weather, but don't forget about taking care of the most neglected and underappreciated part of your body; your feet!
